UK Industrial Production up by 0.4%

In the three months to November 2017, the Index of Production was estimated to have increased by 1.2% compared with the three months to August 2017, due mainly to a rise of 1.4% in manufacturing. There was strong broad-based growth across manufacturing in the three months to November 2017; the largest contribution came from machinery and equipment not elsewhere classified, which included renewable energy equipment, with an increase of 5.6%.

UK house prices 1.3% higher in Q4

House prices in the three months to December were 1.3% higher than in the previous quarter; a gradual slowdown from 2.3% in both October and November. The annual rate of growth has also moderated to 2.7% from November’s 3.9%. Ending the year, house prices in December fell by 0.6%; the first monthly decline in six months. As we’d anticipated, the housing market in 2017 followed a similar pattern to the previous year. House price growth slowed, whilst building activity, completed sales and mortgage approvals for house purchase all remained flat.

UK business activity growth picks up, but strong cost pressures persist

December data indicated that business activity growth picked up across the UK service sector, but the latest survey also found softer rises in new work and employment numbers at the end of 2017. At the same time, service providers indicated another marked increase in their average prices charged, which was overwhelmingly linked to strong cost pressures. Survey respondents signalled the fastest rise in operating expenses for three months, reflecting higher transportation costs, staff salaries and utility bills in December.

UK manufacturing sector growth remains solid at end of 2017

The UK manufacturing sector ended 2017 on a positive note. Although December saw rates of expansion in output, new orders and employment slow from November’s highs, growth in all three remained solid and well above long-run trends. The seasonally adjusted IHS Markit/CIPS Purchasing Managers’ Index® (PMI®) posted 56.3 in December, down from November’s 51-month high of 58.2.
