Australian Retail Sales increased by 0.4%

Australian retail turnover rose 0.4 per cent in August 2016, seasonally adjusted, according to the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Retail Trade figures. This follows a relatively unchanged (0.0 per cent) July 2016. In seasonally adjusted terms, the largest rise was in department stores (3.5 per cent), which followed a fall in July of 5.8 per cent. There were also seasonally adjusted rises in cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (1.2 per cent), food retailing (0.3 per cent) and household goods retailing (0.2 per cent). There were falls in other retailing (-0.6 per cent) and clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-0.4 per cent).

US PPI unchanged in August

U.S. producer prices were flat in August as the cost of energy products declined and trade services fell, but underlying producer inflation firmed. The Labor Department said on Thursday the unchanged reading in its producer price index for final demand followed a 0.4 percent drop in July. In the 12 months through August, the PPI was unchanged after decreasing 0.2 percent in July. Economists polled by Reuters had forecast the PPI nudging up 0.1 percent last month and gaining 0.1 percent from a year ago. Producer prices have been dampened by a strong dollar and cheaper oil. But some of the drag is easing with the dollar rally appearing to have peaked early this year and oil prices having pushed off multi-decade lows.

UK Retail Sales decreased by 0.2%

In August 2016, the quantity bought (volume) of retail sales is estimated to have increased by 6.2% compared with August 2015; all store types except textile, clothing and footwear, and household goods showed growth with the main contribution coming from food stores. The quantity bought decreased by 0.2% compared with July 2016; the largest contribution to the decrease came from non-food stores which was offset by increases in non-store retailing, predominantly food stores and petrol stations.

Australian Retail Sales unchanged in July

Australian Retail Sales  rose 0.1% in July 2016. This follows a rise of 0.1% in June 2016 and a rise of 0.1% in May 2016. The seasonally adjusted estimate was relatively unchanged (0.0%) in July 2016. This follows a rise of 0.1% in June 2016 and a rise of 0.1% in May 2016. In trend terms, Australian turnover rose 2.7% in July 2016 compared with July 2015.
