US retail sales rose by 1.2%, jobless claims still below 300,000

U.S. retail and food services sales for May were $444.9 billion, an increase of 1.2% from the previous month, and 2.7% above May 2014. Analysts were anticipating smaller increase by 1.1% Total sales for the March 2015 through May 2015 period were up 2.1% from the same period a year ago. Retail trade sales were up 1.4% from April 2015, and 2.0% above last year. Motor vehicle and parts dealers were up 8.2% from May 2014 and food services and drinking places were up 8.2% from last year. Core Retail Sales also beat expectations on increase by 0.9% and rose 1.3%.

Unemployment Claims decreased to 276,000

In the week ending May 30, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 276,000, a decrease of 8,000 from the previous week's revised level. Analysts were anticipating smaller decline to 280,000. The previous week's level was revised up by 2,000 from 282,000 to 284,000. The 4-week moving average was 274,750, an increase of 2,750 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 500 from 271,500 to 272,000.   Read more...

Unemployment Claims unexpectedly increased last week

In the week ending May 23, Unemployment Claims were at 282,000, an increase of 7,000 from the previous week's revised level. The previous week's level was revised up by 1,000 from 274,000 to 275,000. Analysts were predicting decrease to 271,000. The 4-week moving average was 271,500, an increase of 5,000 from the previous week's revised average. The previous week's average was revised up by 250 from 266,250 to 266,500.

Unemployment Claims rose to 274,000

In the week ending May 16, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted Unemployment Claims was 274,000, an increase of 10,000 from the previous week's unrevised level of 264,000. Analysts were predicting increase to 271,000. The 4-week moving average was 266,250, a decrease of 5,500 from the previous week's unrevised average of 271,750. This is the lowest level for this average since April 15, 2000 when it was 266,250.
