US Retail Sales unexpectedly fell in March

Sales at U.S. retailers unexpectedly fell in March, raising concern consumer spending is losing momentum. The 0.3% drop in purchases followed little change the prior month, Commerce Department figures showed Wednesday in Washington. The median forecast of 81 economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a 0.1% gain. The decrease was led by the biggest drop in demand for autos in a year, and cutbacks at clothing stores, internet merchants and restaurants.  Read more...

Australian Retail Sales unchanged in February

The trend estimate for Australian retail sales rose 0.2% in February 2016. This follows a rise of 0.2% in January 2016 and a rise of 0.3% in December 2015. The seasonally adjusted estimate was relatively unchanged (0.0%) in February 2016. Analysts were expecting 0.4% increase. This follows a rise of 0.3% in January 2016 and a relatively unchanged (0.0%) December 2015. In trend terms, Australian turnover rose 3.7% in February 2016 compared with February 2015.

UK Retail Sales down by 0.4%

Year-on-year estimates of the quantity bought in the retail industry showed growth for the 34th consecutive month in February 2016, increasing by 3.8% compared with February 2015. The underlying pattern in the data, as suggested by the 3 month on 3 month movement in the quantity bought, showed growth for the 27th consecutive month, increasing by 0.8%. Read more...

US Retail Sales down by 0.1%

U.S. retail sales dropped in February and the prior month’s gain was revised to a decline, calling into question the narrative that bigger gains in consumer spending would propel economic growth at the start of 2016. The 0.1% decline in purchases followed a revised 0.4% January decrease, Commerce Department figures showed Tuesday. Sales excluding gasoline rose 0.2% in February, reversing the previous month’s retreat.
