Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 257,000 in January. Analysts were predicting rise by 224, 000. Job gains occurred in retail trade, construction, health care, financial activities, and manufacturing. After incorporating revisions for November and December monthly job gains averaged 336,000 over the past 3 months.
The unemployment rate, at 5.7%, changed little in January and has shown no netchange since October. However, no change from December's 5.6% was anticipated. The number of unemployed persons, at 9.0 million, was little changed in January.
After the data USD was pushed higher against its major rivals. Euro is currently being traded slightly below 1.1360 level, Sterling is few points above 1.5260 area, while Aussie is around 0.78 handle.
