Australian Retail Sales rose less than expected

Australian Retail Sales rose 0.2% in May 2016. This follows a rise of 0.1% in April 2016 and a rise of 0.4% in March 2016. In trend terms, Australian turnover rose 3.3% in May 2016 compared with May 2015. The following industries rose in trend terms in May 2016: Other retailing (0.5%), Food Retailing (0.1%), Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.4%) and Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.3%). Household goods retailing (0.0%) and Department stores (0.0%) were relatively unchanged in trend terms in May 2016.

Eurozone Trade Balance recorded a €27.5 bn surplus

The first estimate for euro area (EA19) exports of goods to the rest of the world in April 2016 was €172.3 billion, a decrease of 1% compared with April 2015 (€173.9 bn). Imports from the rest of the world stood at €144.8 bn, a fall of 5% compared with April 2015 (€153.0 bn). As a result, the euro area recorded a €27.5 bn surplus in trade in goods with the rest of the world in April 2016, compared with +€20.9 bn in April 2015. The trend estimate rose 0.2% in April 2016. This follows a rise of 0.2% in March 2016 and a rise of 0.2% in February 2016. The seasonally adjusted estimate rose 0.2% in April 2016. Analysts were predicting 0.3% increase. This follows a rise of 0.4% in March 2016 and a rise of 0.1% in February 2016. The seasonally adjusted Australian Retail Sales rose 0.4% in March 2016. Analysts were predicting 0.3% increase. This follows a rise of 0.1% in February 2016 and a rise of 0.4% in January 2016. In trend terms, Australian turnover rose 3.6% in March 2016 compared with March 2015.The following industries rose in trend terms in March 2016: Food retailing (0.1%), Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (0.7%), Household goods retailing (0.2%), Other retailing (0.2%) and Department stores (0.1%). Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.0%) was relatively unchanged in trend terms in March 2016.
